Orthognathic Surgery
Realigning the Jaws. Restoring Balance. Transforming Lives.
When the jaws don’t align properly, the results can go far beyond just a misaligned bite—they can affect your breathing, speech, appearance, and overall quality of life. For some patients, the discrepancy between jaw size and position is just too great to correct with orthodontics alone. That’s where orthognathic surgery (corrective jaw surgery) comes in.
At Braces520, we work closely with several experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Tucson and Phoenix to create seamless, integrated treatment plans that combine orthodontics and jaw surgery to deliver lasting, dramatic results. We are the top surgical office in Southern Arizona, with Dr. Decker and Dr. Rosen combining cutting edge orthodontic techniques such as 3D printed digitally planned braces, MSE/MARPE appliances, TAD’s, and digital Ortho-OS combination surgical planning to ensure you have the absolute best result possible from your surgery. We will even do surgical cases in combination with Invisalign, utilizing TAD’s for the post-surgical stabilization.
What Is Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery is a procedure that surgically repositions the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible), or both. Braces will align the teeth, then surgery corrects the underlying skeletal structure, improving function, aesthetics, and airway health.
This procedure is typically performed after growth is complete, making it ideal for older teens and adults with jaw discrepancies that cannot be corrected with braces alone.
Conditions That May Require Orthognathic Surgery
- Underbite or overbite
- Open bite (front teeth don’t touch)
- Severe crowding due to jaw size mismatch
- Severe crossbites
- Facial asymmetry or imbalance
- Chronic jaw pain (TMJ)
- Obstructive sleep apnea caused by a small jaw
- Older adults with severe crowding or severe narrow jaws
The Treatment Journey
Orthognathic surgery isn’t a quick fix—it’s a journey we guide you through every step of the way. Dr. Rosen and Dr. Decker are passionate about their surgical cases, and work around the clock to fight for what’s best for you and ensure you get the best result possible.
- Orthodontic Preparation
Braces or aligners are used to align the teeth in each jaw independently in preparation for surgery. - 3D Planning & Surgical Coordination
We use digital imaging, 3D scans, and bite simulations to coordinate with your oral surgeon and plan the exact skeletal movements needed. - Surgical Procedure
Performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. Bone cuts are made, the jaws are repositioned, and plates/screws are used to stabilize the new alignment. - Healing & Post-Surgical Braces
After a few weeks of recovery, final orthodontic adjustments are made to perfect your bite.
Life After Surgery
Patients often report:
- Easier chewing and speaking
- Relief from jaw pain or popping
- Improved breathing and sleep quality
- A much improved facial appearance
- A huge boost in confidence
The results are not only functional—but often transformational.
